When quarantine first started, I felt like my world was ending. Not just because I was a 26-year-old moving back in with my parents, but because I had to say goodbye to my morning Equinox classes (and the Kiehl’s shampoo).

During the first two months of being at home, my exercise routine consisted of rolling my eyes, lifting bottles of wine and walking to the door for my Uber Eats. I quickly learned this was not sustainable and decided to build my own home gym!

Grow your muscles and your home

One of the biggest advantages of a home gym is the inherent convenience it brings. Home gyms are “the perfect way to make your home an enjoyable space where you can live bunker-style and still be active, still feel comfortable, and still enjoy,” says homeowner Justin Sullivan.

According to Realtor.com, home gyms are among the top three ways to boost your home’s value. But before you start swinging around kettle bells, you’ll need to find the right space to set it up.

One popular place to set up your home gym is the basement. The value that a finished basement brings to a sale is enormous and can be a major selling point if you intend to put your house on the market this summer as stated by Fairmarket.

Now that you’ve locked down a location for your home gym, it’s time to start stocking up on equipment. When the pandemic first broke out, people started buying meat, toilet paper… and Pelotons. Since mid-March of last year, Peloton’s stock has soared 95 percent, and the New York company finds its valuation at $10 billion—or twice as much as the gym chain Planet Fitness—as reported by the New York Times.

If Peloton isn’t for you, try Mirror. Capitalizing on the stay-at-home workout trend, Lululemon announced it would be buying the interactive home gym company. According to Forbes, Lululemon and Mirror are looking to take the sleek home gym to new levels.

There’s an app for that

Even if you’re not looking to invest in gym equipment, you can still enjoy home workouts since there is an app for everything. Channel your favorite pro athletes with Nike Training Club. Or try Daily Burn Workout, which is basically like having a personal trainer right at your fingertips. And get your flow on at home with Down Dog and its thousands of unique sequences for yogis at all levels.

Once the equipment has been set up and the apps have been downloaded, it’s time to start your workout! What are you waiting for? Adding a home gym is a sweat-free way to add value to your home, get in shape, and improve quality time at home.
